Gymnastics: Upton takes up Hobbs mantle to help GB to silver on debut

DYNAMO School of Gymnastics have a new international in their midst.

With Vanessa Hobbs retiring after the Athens Olympics, 14-year-old Kerri Upton is ready to take up the mantle.

Upton's Great Britain career was launched last weekend when she was called up for a four-way junior international in Italy against Switzerland, Italy and Slovenia.

The standard was high, giving her a good idea of the opposition for next year's junior Europeans.

Upton gave a confident performance, managing to keep calm and focused in such a top-notch field. She achieved a personal best score of 32.90 and finished a creditable tenth out of 24 competitors, helping Britain to the silver medal.

Dynamo head coach Debbie Hampton, still bubbling from the opening of the club's impressive new state-of-the-art facilities at Hamble Community Sports College, said: "Kerri's call-up is great for the club. If we can maintain continuity and keep involved at international level, this will inspire our other talented gymnasts to work towards their dreams to compete for Great Britain."

From Debbie's December Newsletter.........

The Squad Championships were a great success.  Thank you for your kind support, we managed to donate £100 to charity, which we were very pleased with.  The squad all performed well and showed our invited guests why we are one of the country's premier clubs.  My special thanks to the coaches, helpers and fundraising team for their great efforts on the day and £300 was added to the Dynamo fundraising pot.

The boys have had a very successful competition period, the Club has four age group champions in Hampshire.

The girls won the Southern Region Team Championships and the B Team came 4th.

In the Southern Region Challenge Cup, Emma Beales took the Fig title and we took over thirty individual medals.
